Regardless of orientation and attitudes toward self-disclosure, therapists are not “blank slates” when treating body image. Size, appearance, weight, dress, and overall presentation of our physical self are fundamental statements we present to our patients and can be conceived of as indirect forms of self-disclosure. For that matter, what we eat or drink in the therapeutic space is likely to be judged and scrutinized as well! Our willingness as clinicians to process client reactions to our physical appearance encourages an atmosphere of trust and healing. Learn how to invite body image transference and countertransference into the therapeutic space in ways that can foster intimacy, insight, and revelations.
